How to be happy?

In january, I woke up to the coldest, and snowiest day of the year.

I went outside to warm up the car, and my first thought was; this sucks!

After a few seconds, another thought entered in my head; how cool is it that you’re going to warm up the car, so when your girlfriend comes down, she won’t be cold?

You couldn’t do that if it wasn’t freezing.

So I thought; wow, this is an opportunity for me to really live the idea that I’ve been reading about in positive psychology lately.

So I get in the car, turn the key button, but it won’t start.

I’m freezing, and the battery is dead.

Again, my instinct kicks in, and I want to say; this is the worst morning that I’ve ever had.

And then another thought comes in; this is awesome, it’s another opportunity for you to show that you can fix any problem, especially something this small.

Can you convince a stranger to help you jumpstart the car?

And I thought; Ok, that’s kinda cool.

By that time, my GF came out, and of course I used her to convince a male stranger to help us jumpstart the car.

When he pulled up his car, he might have been slightly disappointed to see that the cute girl had a boyfriend, but we got to know each other, and it turns out I have a really cool neighbor.

So I hooked up the cars, and in 2 seconds, I have a working car.

For some reason, when I got back in the car, I felt like the happiest man alive.

That is until I started driving my sports car, and realized that I’m sliding and zig zagging like crazy everywhere on the road.

At this point, I really wanted to be negative, but I looked over at my girlfriend, and surprised myself with what I said.

How cool is it that I get to practice driving a sports car in this weather?

If I can drive this, I can drive anything!

And she said; yeah, that’s a cool way to look at it!

That turned out to be the happiest morning I’ve ever had!

Conclusion

Even though I mess up with this constantly, even with stupid little things like spilling something on my shirt, I’ve had done it right that morning.

I have turned the worst possible morning, to one of the happiest morning of my life.

Every great thinker will tell you that there’s only one way to attain happiness and positivity, and here it is in the words of Eckhart Tolle from the A New Earth book.

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but thought about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking. Separate them from the situation, which is always neutral. It is as it is.”

I have seen this applied to my example, to my friends losing their jobs, and many other circumstances.

Viktor Frankl’s Masterpiece Man’s Search for Meaning have similar ideas of how some people are capable of doing this, even in concentration camps.

It’s pretty safe to assume that almost every one of us has much better circumstances than found in concentration camps.

So there is literally no excuse; we should all have happiness in our lives!

No matter how much we optimize our lives, we will never have full control of external circumstances.

However, the one thing no one can ever take away from us, is our ability to choose our response.

Now you know how to be happy!
